Sensex is a stock market index comprising 30 well-established & financially strong companies listed on BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange)
Sensex is used as an indicator of stock market movements. Example, if Sensex goes up, companies listed in markets are seen as doing well.
Sensex is calculated using free float market capitalisation with the base year as 1978-79 and base value as 100.
The 30 companies included in Sensex are leaders from different sectors. These represent a sample of large and liquid companies.
From only 4,322 points back in 1999 the Sensex rose to 21k points by 2007. By 2022, this index has crossed the 60,000 level.
Sensex has also had some major falls due to economic impacts. In 2008, it fell by 1408 points in a single day due to fall in US market index Dow Jones.
