National stock exchange or NSE is India’s largest stock exchange and also the 10th largest in the world. It commands a market capitalization of over $3.4 trillion.
NSE allows traders and investors to carry out seamless trading/investing across the year. The stock exchange is open for trading on weekdays between 9.15 a.m.–3.30 p.m. This is about 6 hours and 15 minutes of stock market action.
NSE is closed for trading every week on both Saturdays and Sundays for the equity, equity derivative and SLB segments.
Bombay Stock Exchange or BSE is India’s and Asia’s oldest stock exchange. Established back in 1875, today BSE is the 11th largest stock exchange globally in terms of market capitalisation. The Bombay Stock Exchange has about 6,000 listed companies and has a heavy influence on the country’s financial infrastructure.
Similar to NSE, BSE allows trading between 9.15 a.m. – 3.30 p.m on weekdays. It remains closed every week on Saturdays and Sundays.
Muhurat Trading is a special trading session that is held on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. During this session, trading is allowed for an hour. Diwali is one of India’s widely celebrated festivals.
In 2023, Muhurat Trading will be conducted by NSE and BSE on November 12, 2023. The timings of Muhurat trading are released later in the year by both the stock exchanges.

9am to 9.15am is known as the pre-market session on NSE and BSE. During these 15 minutes, the first 8 minutes are meant for order entry, collection, modification, and cancellations. The next 7 minutes involve matching of orders, trade confirmation before a smooth transition into routine market hours.
You can buy stocks after trading hours, however, the trade will be executed only on the following day once the markets open for regular trading.
