International Securities Identification Number (ISIN)

ISIN stands for International Securities Identification Numbering. This is a system used for identifying unique securities, so that no two securities could be confused or mixed up due to human or technical error. It uses a standardised format of numbering under the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).
A country’s National Numbering agency (NNA) is the authorised agency which issues, manages and monitors the ISIN.

ISIN Explained

An ISIN code or number consists of 12 alphanumeric characters.
The first two are assigned by the company’s country of origin. The 9 characters between the first and the last, are utilized for unique identification of the security.
The last digit is a validation number for preventing errors and ensuring authenticity.
Example INE090A01013 is the ISIN for ICICI Bank and INE238A01026 is the ISIN for Axis Bank.
